There’s a World full of out-of-the-way Honeymoon Destinations. Which one’s for you?
For some newlyweds, the honeymoon is all about some serious just-the-two-of-us quality time. For others, it’s all about the people they can meet and adventures they can have. Either way, we have the luxury and adventure – or a mix of the two – that you’re looking for. We spoke with Cool Springs Travel Group owner and agent Cynthia Davis to find the most romantic, exotic and adventurous honeymoon destinations for the local couple who wants to go big.
Tahiti/French Polynesia: Bora Bora
The most famous of French Polynesia’s Society Islands, Bora Bora is a cultural gem. The best time to travel to this beautiful destination is during dry season, November through April. May through October is considered the rainy season but it’s also the busiest tourist season. Bora Bora highlights include:
Snorkeling – this diver’s paradise will not disappoint with activities like swimming with sting rays and feeding reef sharks. If sea life interests you but you’d like to stay atop the water, sport fishing is a popular activity, along with paddle boarding, jet ski rentals and hobie cats. You can tour the island on a 4×4 jeep island safari or by helicopter. If you prefer to trek on foot, there are plenty of hiking and exploring options, including Valley of the Kings – a three-hour walk touring archeological sites; Ancestors Road or Track of the Past – a full day tour around the island; or the ascent of Mt. Otemanu, with a stop at the Sacred Cave of Anau and/or Mt. Pahia (six-hour trip). If relaxation is more your thing, downtown Vaitape is perfect for exploring, dining and shopping. Exquisite spas can be found throughout the island and you can even visit the famous Bloody Mary’s Restaurant & Bar.

USVI: St. Thomas
If you wish to travel somewhere exotic without the use of a passport, look no further than St. Thomas, one of the United States Virgin Islands. St. Thomas offers anything and everything a couple could want on a honeymoon. From hiking the famous 99 Steps for beautiful island views; to sport fishing, golf and snorkeling, this island has it all. Not to mention, the beaches are quite lovely as well. Car rentals or private transfers are available for travelers.
- Ritz Carlton St. Thomas
- Frenchman’s Reef & Morning Star Marriott Resort
If staying at a resort is not for you, private villas are available with options for private staff. One bedroom villas would be perfect for a romantic honeymoon while 10-bedroom villas would accommodate a destination wedding.
Santorini, Greece: Cyclades Island of Agean Sea
The best times to travel to this beautiful island are April through May and October to early November. Santorini is a 45-minute plane ride from Athens, or a few hours by ferry. While you’re in Santorini, enjoy the two principal towns of Fira and Oia, panoramic views of the famous caldera, beautiful sunsets, winery tours and tastings, and the street markets of Fira. If swimming and exploring are more your thing, enjoy Amoudi Bay, a variety of white, gray and black sand beaches, and scuba diving and snorkeling. Known for domed blue roofs and white facades, be sure to enjoy all Santorini has to offer architecturally as well. From Akrotiri Archaelogical Site and the Cathedral of St. John to the quiet Therasia Volcanic Island, you’re sure to enjoy every step and view. Additionally, plan on spending a day or two in Athens for a once in a lifetime tour of Acropolis Hill.
