For Maxi B. Home of Brentwood
With Mother’s Day arriving May 8, it’s the perfect time for Karen Fuqua to pay special tribute to her own mom. That’s because her mother inspired the name for Fuqua’s innovative home décor shop which opened in Brentwood last November.
Fuqua explains. “My mother taught me at an early age the value of hosting guests in our home. She grew up in Nashville and passed her southern style on to me. My mom took great care in the details of entertaining, making sure guests had everything they needed. Her table was always set, lamps were on – never overhead lighting – and centerpieces displayed. She had a great eye for design, and still does, and knew how to incorporate that flair in a home.”
So when Fuqua decided to open a home decorating store in Brentwood, the shop’s name came to her quite easily. “I named the store after my mother Maxine. Maxi after my mom, and B is for Bivens, my maiden name,” says Fuqua. So Maxi B. Home it was.
How did Fuqua decide on Brentwood for her store’s location? “My parents lived in Brentwood and Franklin since 1974,
” she says. “I looked at many areas for Maxi B. Home, but kept coming back to where I felt most at home. The city of Brentwood has been very supportive of Maxi B. And here in City Park, we have a close knit group of retailers and eateries. I love this about our area. I’ve lived in Brentwood and have many wonderful friends here.”
When it came to deciding on her store’s inventory, it was important to Fuqua that Maxi B. offer a wide array of home furnishings. “We have furniture, lighting, artwork, rugs, tabletop decorations and beautiful accessories,” she says. “In addition we have ‘happys’ such as candles, soaps, lotions, books and many other gift selections.”
In addition to a wide array of merchandise, she also wanted the price-points of her goods to be cost-effective. “My desire was to have great pieces that are affordable for all generations.”
Once she nailed down her inventory and pricing, Fuqua looked beyond Nashville and even the state of Tennessee to furnish her store. “I shopped the Dallas marketplace for my opening inventory,” she says. “The market in Dallas is where I feel most comfortable, however I have attended other markets as well. At every market I am always looking for items that are different and will appeal to a diverse customer base.”
When asked what has been the most enjoyable aspect of managing her store, Fuqua is quick to reply. “The best part of opening Maxi B. has been our customers. We have sorority sisters to YaYas shopping here. And we help pull together dorm rooms to board rooms, and everything in between. Making shopping fun is our goal.” Fuqua has been “pleasantly surprised” with the popularity of her store’s merchandise, and says if she had to choose, her favorite goods are tabletop, pillows and art.
“My biggest surprise since opening Maxi B. Home is how much fun we have every day,” says Fuqua. “Don’t get me wrong, retail isn’t for sissies. But my employees and customers fuel my soul.”
And based on her shop’s popularity, that feeling is mutual.
Maxi B. Home is located at 7030 Executive Center Drive in Brentwood.
