Woods Murphy’s Local Hang is a Fitting Tribute to his Famous Father.
With a growing roster of chain restaurants going up in Brentwood over the past few years, there has been a real hunger for new restaurants with more of a true local flavor. Murff’s Craft Brews & Burgers is helping to fill that unique niche with its own brand of friendly service, inventive burgers and craft brews.
“Although it’s a little off the beaten path, once you find us, we believe you’ll be back,” said owner Woods Murphy. “Word of mouth has done very well for us.”
Murff’s is located off Harpeth Drive, in the former location of Phillip’s Delicatessen. Murphy, who also owns Corner Pub in the Woods in Bellevue, saw the potential to expand Phillip’s brisk lunch business into dinner and craft beer.
When you come to Murff’s, you’ll notice right away that burgers are the featured attraction. All of their burgers come in four sizes and are carefully ground by hand with fresh ribeye and ground chuck. Simply pick your meat, bun, cheese and favorite toppings.
In addition to sliders, wraps and salads, the menu features unique appetizers like Redneck Calamari, Bill’s Dills and Boom Boom Buffalo Chips. Sandwiches are given a local twist with names like the Maryland Farm-Raised Fish Sandwich, Nash-Philly Steak, Franklin Road French Dip and Brentwood’s Best BLT.
Capitalizing on the growing international renown of Nashville’s dining scene, Murff’s features its own version of “Nashville Hot Chicken.” To help quench the growing thirst for local beer, the restaurant also features about 20 taps of brews from Nashville and the state of Tennessee. You can even fill up a growler of beer to take home to enjoy.
As a lifelong resident of Middle Tennessee, Murphy’s roots run deep throughout the area. As a child, he attended local Scales Elementary and still maintains strong connections with friends in the Brentwood community. Naturally, he wants to run and own a successful restaurant, but his reasoning for opening Murff’s is very special and personal to him.
“I opened the restaurant up to honor my Dad,” said Murphy.
His father, Wayne Murphy, was a lifetime resident, real estate broker, Marine and cartoonist for The Tennessean. His artwork lovingly adorns the walls of the restaurant, along with a selection of his cherished golf clubs. One of the more unique pieces of framed art in Murff’s is a collection of school lunch bags, drawn and painted by Wayne for his son, Woods.
Wayne is also known for creating Murff’s Magic Mix Seasonings. The special mix has been a closely guarded secret for decades, known only to select family members. The seasoning serves as the foundation for the Murff’s Craft Beers & Burgers’ signature flavor.
“I still use it on everything I make both here and at home,” Murphy says.
In March, Murff’s will commemorate its one-year anniversary in Brentwood with a special St. Patrick’s Day celebration. They plan on starting a new local tradition with Irish food and Irish-inspired specials.
“We’re hoping it inspires more people to come on out and try to find us,” said Murphy.
Possible future plans for Murff’s include a patio, a screened-in porch and an expanded menu featuring “meat-and-three” options. With its rich history, local beers and Nashville-centric dishes, Murff’s has all the ingredients of a a new Brentwood dining destination for both locals and visitors.
